Honoring Phil Johnston
Sun Apr 06 2025

We are deeply saddened to share that Philip W. Johnston, who founded RFK Children’s Action Corps in 1969 (now part of RFK Community Alliance), has passed away.
After working on Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign—tragically cut short by RFK’s assassination—Phil, supported by a group of fellow campaign workers, founded and served as the inaugural Executive Director of RFK Children’s Action Corps. Under Phil’s leadership, the organization placed a groundbreaking emphasis on caring for and educating children in the juvenile justice system, rather than simply punishing them.
Phil went on to serve in senior roles in the Massachusetts legislature, the state cabinet, and the United States government before founding his own Boston-based health and human services consulting firm, Philip W. Johnston Associates. Until his final days, Phil remained an active advisor, a trusted friend, and a passionate advocate to us at RFK Community Alliance in support of the children, teens, and adults we serve.
Phil was also a remarkable storyteller whose words brought history to life and inspired hope for the future. Through his work with this organization and many others, he helped open doors for countless young people—offering them a second chance and a path to thrive.
A tireless advocate for children and families, Phil dedicated his life to building a more just and compassionate world. Inspired by Robert F. Kennedy’s legacy of equity, justice, and service, he embraced those same values and wove them into everything he did. His vision and leadership laid the groundwork for many of the programs we offer today. RFK Community Alliance will proudly carry forward Phil's life’s mission, ensuring that his legacy—and the spirit of RFK’s values—lives on in the work we do every day.
Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and granddaughter. We are forever grateful for his legacy and will miss him greatly.
