Celebrating the Burton Family
Mon Oct 07 2024
Every year, Embracing the Legacy, our signature celebration, shines a spotlight on people who share the values and commitment to social justice embodied by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy Sr. This year, we’re excited to recognize the Burton Family. They’ve been long time champions of young people in Massachusetts, and it’s a pleasure to honor them with the Embracing the Legacy Award.
The Burton Family is proudly carrying on the legacy of Ron Burton Sr.—father, NFL player, and humanitarian—through their leadership of the Ron Burton Training Village (RBTV). Founded by Ron Sr. in 1985, RBTV empowers young people from underserved communities to develop their character, leadership, and academic skills through physical training and spiritual guidance.
Ron Burton Sr.'s journey is a powerful tale of resilience and compassion. Overcoming significant childhood hardships, he became the first player drafted by the New England Patriots. His impact endures at RBTV, where participants—known as RBTV Villagers—rise at 4:30 a.m. five days a week to run seven miles, embodying his spirit of perseverance.
The family’s commitment to RBTV is led by JoAnn Burton, Ron Sr.'s wife, who has been a cornerstone of the village since its inception. Her unwavering support and nurturing presence provide essential emotional and spiritual guidance to the youth, ensuring that Ron Sr.'s vision continues to inspire future generations.
Their children have also taken on leadership roles to continue their father’s work:
Elizabeth Burton Scott guides the village’s educational programs, helping to develop academic initiatives that give youth the tools to succeed beyond the athletic field.
Paul Burton, a reporter, leads the development team for RBTV and is involved in day-to-day operations and mentorship, ensuring that RBTV’s programs remain aligned with its mission of holistic development for youth.
Phil Burton serves as the Executive Director of RBTV, playing a crucial role in shaping the programs focused on mentorship, leadership, and spiritual development.
Ron Burton Jr. is the president and chairman of the board. He brings his leadership to the village’s athletic and personal development programs, ensuring that the values of love, peace, patience, and humility are instilled in all participants. He works with his brother Phil to impact and lead RBTV’s strategic direction.
Steve Burton uses his background as a former athlete and sports broadcaster to raise awareness of the village’s impact and works closely with his brother Paul to further development efforts.
Together, the Burton Family—guided by JoAnn’s loving influence and Ron Sr.’s enduring vision—continues to build on the foundation he established. The Ron Burton Training Village impacts the lives of countless young men and women, empowering them to grow through character, discipline, and community.
