Empowering Individuals, Strengthening Families

Through over 25 different programs, RFK Community Alliance delivers personalized, high-quality care to children, adults, and families navigating life's toughest challenges.

Our approach is holistic and strengths-focused, believing in the potential within everyone to grow, heal, and thrive.

Guided by collaboration, proven methods, and trauma-informed care, our expert team helps build resilience, foster connections, and unlock lasting positive pathways.

Advancing Well-Being for All Ages

Our mission is simple yet powerful: to promote meaningful and sustained well-being for children, youth, and adults facing educational, developmental, mental health, and other challenges.

People are at the heart of everything we do. From the youngest to the oldest, we help individuals discover their strengths, foster well-being, and create meaningful lives.

Our commitment to diversity, belonging, inclusion, and equity fuels our work, shaping how we support our team, engage in our programs, and drive lasting change.

Reflections from this Past Year

From Michael and Jim

Dear Friends,

This past year brought resilience, progress, and inspiring moments of accomplishment. Even as we face increasing demands across our programs, the strength and determination of those we serve—and the dedication of our team—continue to shine. Every challenge has reinforced our belief in the power of personalized care and the importance of celebrating small victories that lead to meaningful change.

Our three special education schools continue to support students navigating profound mental health and behavioral challenges, often coping with the lasting effects of trauma. In our community programs, many teens and young adults are battling homelessness, food insecurity, and/or significant mental health struggles. Meanwhile, our adult programs are witnessing an unprecedented surge in young individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities aging out of youth systems, placing immense pressure on families who are already stretched thin.

In response, we remain unwavering in our commitment to provide high-quality, individualized care. Across Boston, Springfield, Lancaster, and beyond, our teams deliver compassionate, evidence-based, and personalized support to over 2,000 individuals and their families. Through more than 19,000 one-on-one meetings this year, along with group sessions and workshops, and an increased focus on providing every program participant with clinical support, we’ve made progress one step at a time.

As parents, we are reminded daily of the power of small victories, and that’s what we strive to foster for every person in our care. Whether it’s a child bonding with a support animal, a teen graduating from one of our schools, or a young person having a laugh with their mentor for the first time, these moments are the building blocks of real change. These moments inspire us, as they reflect perseverance, connection, and growth.

With gratitude for your support and advocacy, we look forward to continuing this vital work, together, in the year ahead.

Celebrating

Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity

We know that when a program participant sees themselves and their culture reflected in the staff, spaces, and traditions of our programming, they have a better chance of flourishing in our care and beyond. Similarly, we know that when our team members see their diverse cultures and backgrounds celebrated they are more likely to feel like they belong and, therefore, be at their best. Recognizing the importance of celebrating diversity, promoting belonging, equity, and inclusion, we have prioritized efforts in this regard. So what did we do in 2024 and why does it matter? Four areas of focus stand out.

  1. Assessment: Utilizing a staff engagement survey and key workforce metrics we evaluated how we are doing. Proudly, although we have work to do, we are becoming more diverse, equitable, and inclusive as an organization with staff reflecting, through survey results, a sense of belonging. This has also been demonstrated by improved turnover rates.

  2. Training: Incorporated into annual training and new orientation is training that helps us understand the impact of bias, micro aggressions, dehumanizing language and how each of us plays an important role in supporting and enhancing a culture of belonging that celebrates diversity and that promotes equity and inclusion.

  3. Cultural Celebrations: Throughout the year, we paused to celebrate the important cultures of those we work with and that we serve. Celebrations of our diverse cultures and team members included Hispanic history and culture during Hispanic Heritage Month, Juneteenth, LGBTQIA+ Pride month, and many more.

  4. Hiring, Recruitment, and Advancement: Education, human service, and health fields have been plagued with high vacancies, high burnout, turnover. Too often direct care roles reflect significant diversity, but managers and professional level positions lack that same diversity. We strongly believe that increasing diversity across the organization enhances the quality of our work and strengthens our organization. Thought the year, we have been intentional with our recruitment and hiring, and through a focus on supervision, training, and professional development, we have enhanced the opportunities for all staff to advance within the organization. The result has been a decrease in vacancies and an increase in diversity across the organization.

Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity

From our Team Members' Perspectives

Danigny Jean-Louis, Program Director of Curtis Hall -a Dr Franklin Perkins School residential education program- appreciates that the organization's DBIE efforts are open to all staff at any level of the organization and that all voices are heard. She appreciates the support she and her team members receive on tough topics like responding to dehumanizing language and on building a culture of belonging for the program’s participants and staff. She looks forward to many more years of creating safe spaces and inclusive practices.

Emily Lupien, a Center for Behavioral Health team member, shared how the training provided by Dr. Jessica Pepple, Chief Diversity and Culture Officer, and others has profoundly impacted her. Emily explained that the knowledge she has gained has transformed not only how she empathizes with and serves the people who receive services through the Center for Behavioral Health, but also how she interacts with the world. Across her spheres, she feels more confident asking questions, challenging norms, and advocating for inclusivity.

Detention Diversion Advocacy Program

Program Spotlight

The Detention Diversion Advocacy Program (DDAP) is dedicated to addressing the disproportionate number of youth of color who enter the juvenile court system in Massachusetts' Suffolk and Hampden Counties. With a compassionate, restorative, and community-based support approach, DDAP offers a path forward for young people, providing them with the opportunity to avoid court involvement, while simultaneously empowering them to set meaningful goals for themselves. DDAP participants receive coaching, mentoring, and case management support.

Juliet Ochoa (pictured far right), Program Coordinator for DDAP Western Ma, often reflects on a quote from Mark Twain that truly shapes her work: “The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.” Working with youth and their families has profoundly deepened her understanding of the immense challenges young people face within the judicial system. Together with the program's staff, our Youth Advocates, she has had the privilege of engaging with families from all walks of life, and witnessing firsthand the incredible strength they possess. Their resilience and empathy are constant sources of inspiration.

Our Youth Advocates play a vital role in supporting youth and their families. They offer individualized, wraparound services that extend far beyond traditional support. This includes accompanying youth to court, attending school meetings, helping with job placements, and organizing a variety of enriching activities such as trips, recreational events, and special occasions that foster growth, connection, and a sense of belonging. Through DDAP, we help youth envision and achieve a brighter future—one that is full of possibility and support.

DDAP has a proven impact on youth of color involved in the juvenile court systems in Massachusetts. The program has been shown to reduce entry into the juvenile justice system, reduce youth from missing court dates, and reduce re-offending by much as 50% when compared to youth in similar situations. We are proud to say that since it's inception in 2005, DDAP has served over 1,300 youth.

Donor Spotlight

The Najarian Family, ACT Leasing

RFK Community Alliance’s partnership with the Najarian family spans nearly three decades, rooted in shared values. Paul Najarian Sr., now 79, fondly recalls the first vehicle he leased to RFK Children’s Action Corps when he worked at Mirak Leasing. It was a Chevrolet. And when Paul Sr. founded ACT Leasing in 2002, striking out on his own, we became one of their first customers. Today, 60% of ACT’s business supports nonprofits like ours as they have come to know the needs of the human services sector well, offering specialized vehicles like 10-passenger vans with a center aisle for staff members to utilize.

The Najarian family’s support extends far beyond vehicle leasing. They are steadfast supporters of our signature event, Embracing the Legacy (ETL), since its beginnings as an awards breakfast. Both Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. are deeply moved by the stories shared at ETL, which bring our mission to life. Paul Sr. vividly recalls the journey of a former program participant who overcame extraordinary odds to rebuild his life after significant court-involvement, as well as last year’s powerful testimony from a young woman who survived years of sexual exploitation in her teens. These stories affirm their belief in supporting organizations that give individuals the chance to succeed, no matter their circumstances.

The Najarian Family, ACT Leasing

Both Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. emphasize a philosophy we share too: equipping people with the skills and tools to achieve independence is paramount. They also recognize that this can look different for people depending on their abilities. And they admire our dedicated staff for their emotionally challenging work and unwavering commitment to making a difference.

ACT Leasing is a true family affair as many Najarian family members, including Paul Sr’s wife Lucille, contribute to its success and its continuing legacy of compassion and service. The Najarian family and ACT Leasing have provided significant donations to RFKCA over our 30 year-partnership, leaving a lasting impact on our mission and the lives we touch.

We are profoundly grateful for ACT Leasing’s partnership and the Najarian family’s generosity. Their support not only fuels our mission but inspires us to provide hope and opportunity to those who need it most. Thank you, ACT Leasing, for your incredible legacy of impact!

(Pictured: Paul Najarian Jr, Paul Najarian Sr, and Lucille Najarian)

“We support RFK Community Alliance’s work financially and, in our hearts, because our family believes in giving people who have been dealt tough circumstances through no fault of their own a chance to succeed and become contributing members of society. Everyone deserves that chance.”

- Paul Najarian Jr.
